For Learners of English: What You Need to Know

People have realized the importance of learning English and true enough, more and more students are signing up for language lessons. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t know what they’re getting into or what they should expect. Learning a new language can be difficult and it is always best to have guidelines before entering the field. Here is a list of things that learners of English must know in order to have a more fulfilling educational experience:

1. You Must Want to Learn English.
Don’t learn English just because someone wants you to. The motivation must come from no one else but you. If you take English lessons half-heartedly, you will trouble learning the language. You will dread each class and more likely than not, end up quitting. Don’t waste your money or your valuable time. If you really don’t want to learn English right now, don’t force the issue. Wait for the time when you’re ready and eager to learn.

2. You Must Find the Time
Unfortunately, there are no short cuts. You can’t expect to learn the language by signing up for English classes once a month. The best way to learn English is to set aside a study schedule during a specific time each day. These study lessons don’t have to be long. Lessons can range from 20 minutes to half an hour. Studying a little each day will help you remember and retain what you just learned. You need to make a commitment.

3. English Lessons Can Be Fun
Learners of English might be surprised to find out that yes, English lessons can be fun. There are alternative teaching methods that are just as effective as two-hour long, daily classroom sessions but are much more appealing to utilize. These methods include conversational tutoring and supervised word games. What is important is finding a method that is most effective for you and that you will stick to.

4. You Must Practice Speaking Often
Your 30-60 minute session with your tutor must not end there. Learners of English must go out of their way to practice speaking the language often. Try practicing with your friends or better yet, start hanging out with native English speakers. When alone, study out loud so you can practice your pronunciation. Don’t feel embarrassed about your diction or poor vocabulary skills. People know you’re in the process of learning the language and they will more often than not make an effort to help you.
